Facebook $725 Million Settlement: How to Claim Your Money

Facebook users have less than a week left to opt in to part of a $725 million class action settlement related to the Cambridge Analytica data scandal.

(ticker: META) agreed to pay the settlement in late 2022 to resolve the case, which alleged the company allowed entities like the now-defunct Cambridge Analytica to access personal information about users without their permission.

The deadline to claim a portion of the payout is Friday, Aug. 25, for U.S. Facebook users who were on the social media platform between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022. The size of each individual’s portion of the payout will depend on how many people fill out a form at facebookuserprivacysettlement.com.

The case covers between 250 million and 280 million users, according to the settlement agreement. Users can opt to receive the funds as a prepaid card, a direct deposit or through payment apps like Venmo or Zelle.

Facebook also settled in 2019 with the Federal Trade Commission and agreed to pay a $5 billion penalty and accept new restrictions on its handling of data.
