Thinking About EVs? Here are the 5 Cheapest Cities for Electric Vehicles

With the tempting incentives of generous tax credits, declining costs, and more models to choose from, more people considering the purchase of EVs. However, they have their drawbacks, especially in places that lack the necessary infrastructure to accommodate them. But if you happen to live in one of the 5 cheapest cities for those who own electric vehicles, it could be a wise investment.

5 Cheapest Cities for Electric Vehicles

When compiling this list, three major factors were taken into consideration: the cost of gas, the cost of electricity in each state, and the number of available charging stations. Based on these facts, these are the 5 cheapest cities for electric vehicles.

1. Seattle

While it may come as a surprise, Seattle takes the top spot on this list. However, when you look at the figures, it makes more sense. When compared to other urban centers, it has one of the lowest costs for electricity at 9.79 cents/kWh. This fact, coupled with fuel prices that are well above the national average at $4.333/gallon, makes the savings clearer. Furthermore, it also has 428 charging stations throughout the metro area for easy recharging. With all things considered, it seems like an EV would be a smart investment for anyone living in the Emerald City.

2. Portland

Although many people refer to it as the most environmentally friendly city in America, Portland is also one of the cheapest cities for electric vehicles. Unfortunately, gas prices are much higher than in other states, with Oregonians paying an average of $3.990/gallon. However, the cost of electricity is rather cheap at 11.02 cents/kWh. And with over 350 public charging stations, you should have no trouble keeping your EV running for extended trips.

3. Chicago

Chicago is another city that offers EV consumers a price advantage. Gas prices in the metro area are just about at the national average of $3.387/gallon. However, residents of Illinois only pay 12.56 cents/kWh. And, with 602 charging stations around the city, EVs become a more convenient choice for drivers. Additionally, its central location provides access to a wider market and better prices for those willing to shop around and ship vehicles from other locations.

4. Los Angeles

Driving in California is a huge expense for any driver, no matter what vehicle you drive. Part of the reason is that it has some of the highest fuel costs in the country with an average of $4.914/gallon. Although the price of electricity is high compared to the rest of the country at 19.90 cents/kWh, switching to an EV could save you a significant amount of money. And with more charging stations than in any other city (4,887), you will have no trouble keeping your vehicle fully functioning everyone you go.

5. San Jose

It probably doesn’t shock many readers to see another city in California on this list. With the high energy costs, residents are looking for new ways to reduce their consumption without sacrificing convenience. While gas is slightly cheaper here at $4.77/gallon, it doesn’t save much in the long run. And even though other cities like San Diego may have more charging stations, you wouldn’t have trouble finding one of the 1,419 in San Jose.

Fuel for Thought

Although EVs have been getting more attention recently due to energy savings,  it may not make sense depending on where you live. So, make sure to do your homework and learn more about the infrastructure and cost comparisons for your city. What could be a wise decision for some may turn into a waste for others.
